Meaningful Activities Facilitators from Leicester’s Hospitals, with backing from the Purple Angel Project, an organisation that aims to promote Dementia awareness, are holding a ‘World Rocks Against Dementia’ event at Beaumont Shopping Centre in Beaumont Leys on Saturday 18 March from 9am – 6pm.
From 9am there will be a variety of different activities throughout the day ranging from jazz and blues singer Joe Doyle to the Anstey Swing dancers who will be ‘Dancing for Dementia’. During the event the Meaningful Activities Facilitators will also be fundraising for the Forget Me Not Fund, which will allow them to do more activities with dementia patients.
World Rocks Against Dementia is a worldwide event aiming to promote dementia awareness through musical events. The founder of the organisation, Norman McNamara, challenged one of the Meaningful Activities Facilitators, Heather Illingworth, to set up an event in Leicestershire. They have accepted the challenge!
The Meaningful Activities team from Leicester’s Hospitals aim to improve the experience of patients with dementia on the older people’s wards at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield Hospital.
The Purple Angel Project, who chose 18 March as World Rocks Dementia Day, try to help those living with dementia, their families, friends and those helping to raise awareness of the disease. They strive to become a global symbol for dementia that has no language barriers and are backed by organisations across the globe.
Charlotte Leeds, Meaningful Activities Team Leader at Leicester’s Hospitals, said: “The Meaningful Activities team are passionate about promoting dementia awareness within the hospitals. World Rocks Against Dementia is the perfect opportunity for us to show our passion beyond the hospital setting and to speak to people in the community about dementia. We are also very grateful to the Beaumont Shopping Centre for their support in holding this event.”
