Throughout the day, the team shared facts and figures, along with footage of new technology and procedures, information about job opportunities and an opportunity to take closer look at the roles of the staff that patients might meet on their journey through our hospitals.

Angharad Thorpe, chief pharmacy technician for Clinical Services at Leicester’s Hospitals, said: “We have many hidden pharmacy services that are rarely seen by the public so we wanted to demonstrate what pharmacy does and celebrate the excellent work undertaken by our staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“We also wanted to show what we, as a team, have to offer to anyone who wants join our service to make a real improvement to patient care.”

The day started at 10am with the Renal Pharmacy team at Leicester General Hospital. Consultant pharmacist, Maria Martinez and the team gave an insight into the pharmacy service offered to renal patients, looking at immunosuppressant therapy, haemodialysis and the aftercare for kidney transplants.

The Cardiac Decisions Unit at Glenfield Hospital was next in the spotlight, where specialist pharmacist Jess Gadsby and the team demonstrated the work they do to support patients and improve care on the busy wards.

In the early afternoon, chief pharmacy information officer, Graeme Hall gave the communications team exclusive access to the Trust’s Operational Command room to reveal the important role the pharmacy team play in patient flow through our hospitals.

Later in the day, the public had a chance to find out more the respiratory service, where specialist respiratory pharmacist, Anna Murphy showcased the contributions the pharmacy team make to the respiratory service, as well as her input to national respiratory services.

The full day of interactive sessions ended with the often overlooked Medicines Information Team, where senior medicines information pharmacist, Bini Bhakta explained the vital roles the team play in delivering advice, support and training to hospital staff and GPs, as well as overseeing clinical trials for new drugs.
