The Lord Mayor was joined by Karamjit Singh, Chairman of Leicester’s Hospitals, members of the meaningful activities team and Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Support to join in with fun and games in the Ward dayroom. The Lord Mayor met patients and staff, with a particular focus on the work that is done at Leicester’s Hospitals with patients with dementia as this is a key area of interest for him. He has chosen to support organisations and charities working with health and mental health issues throughout his year in office and will be specifically supporting Alzheimer’s Society.

Alzheimer’s Society aim to transform the landscape of dementia forever and strive to create a society where those affected by dementia are supported, accepted and able to live in their community without fear or prejudice until a cure is found.

The Lord Mayor of Leicester said, “Visiting Ward 29 at Leicester Royal Infirmary was a wonderful opportunity to see the good work taking place to empower the patient experience.

“Patients are encouraged to get involved in activities and games, as well as dancing. The music helps take the patients down memory lane and makes them feel good and happy in their peer group. The incredible work by the staff, support workers, volunteers and charities is to be commended. I am very pleased to join in with these activities and see the smiles on patient’s faces.”

Chairman of Leicester’s Hospitals, Karamjit Singh, said, “On behalf of the Trust I would like to extend our thanks to the Lord Mayor for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit Ward 29 at Leicester Royal Infirmary. The Lord Mayor has a particular focus on mental health charities and we are pleased to partner Alzheimer’s Society.”

Sophie Tucker, of Alzheimer's Society – Central and South East Midlands, said, “It is fantastic to see Leicester’s Hospitals meaningful activities team working alongside Alzheimer’s Society to deliver events such as this and raise awareness of the good work we do. We are delighted that the Lord Mayor paid us a visit and joined in with the games and dancing.”
