Work Experience for University Applications

Medical Students

  • What do Leicester's Hospitals offer
    A maximum of 4 days work observation specifically tailored to aspiring medical students. This is an annual course, advertised in the New Year on line and sent to sixth form schools in Leicestershire.   Places are limited to a maximum of 104.
  • Who is it aimed at?
    Principally 6th Formers with some post A2 undergraduate/post graduates. Catchment area strictly limited to Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
  • How do I apply
    A leaflet will be circulated to all schools / colleges with a sixth form in catchments area
  • What do I need
    Aged greater than 16, a minimum of 8 A*/A at GCSE and a reference from school / college

Occupational Therapy

  • What do UHL offer? 
    1/2 day shadowing opportunities to ask questions about occupational therapy as a course and career.
  • Who is it aimed at?
    People that are 17yrs and over, and who have an interest in embarking upon Occupational Therapy as a chosen career path or who have already applied for Occupational Therapy at degree level. Or seeking a job within Occupational Therapy or assistant level.
  • How do I apply?
    All queries are sent to Helen Sheard (Occupational Therapist), an application form is sent out to the applicant to complete and return.
  • What do I need?
    A-levels/ A/s Levels, previous degrees and other qualification related to Health and Social Care.

Radiology

  • What do UHL offer?
    2 days maximum observation of the different imaging modalities provided within UHL
  • Who is it aimed at?
    Students wanting to apply for radiography degree courses
  • How do I apply?
    Via direct contact to staff working within Imaging
  • What do I need?
    To be over 16 years of age.

Medical Physics

  • What do UHL offer?
    Observation of the different Medical Physics services provided within UHL and where applicable we also arrange short term (1 – 2 week) project based assignments
  • Who is it aimed at?
    Students with a long term interest in a career within Physics / Healthcare
  • How do I apply?
    Direct contact to staff working within medical physics
  • What do I need?
    To be over 18 years of age for placements within Nuclear Medicine

Embryology

  • What do UHL offer and who is it aimed at?
    For graduates applying for the Scientific Training Programme (STP) in Reproductive Science and Andrology we offer:  One full day to shadow a member of the laboratory team, one student at a time. Monday or Wednesday, subject to theatre case load and staffing, from 8.15 am until  4.00 pm.  Only one visit per student.  Longer placements are not offered.
    For students in Post-16 education, who have a particular interest in Embryology and/or Andrology and graduates with similar interests we offer:  A 2-hour group session (limited up to 6 students at a time), which includes a tour around the premises, a detailed presentation of the services we offer and the laboratory procedures we perform, videos of sperm sample motility and embryo development, images of normal and abnormal spermatozoa, information about STP applications. 

  • How do I apply?
    All queries to be sent to Christina Michailidou-Ahmed (Clinical Embryologist), together with the applicant's CV.  An application form will then be sent to the applicant to complete and return.                                                        

  • What do I need?
    For the full day shadowing experience: meet the requirements of applying for an STP position and be applying for the next STP intake.                                                                                                                         
    For the group session:  A  minimum of an A level (or equivalent) in Biology with the view to pursuing a Biological Sciences degree at university.  Graduates with a degree in Biological Sciences and those still studying are also accepted.

Pharmacy

  • What do UHL Offer? Your chance to visit Leicester Royal  Infirmary, hear about the pre-registration training programme we offer and speak to our current pre-registration trainees.
  • Open afternoons:  these will be running in June and July 2018.  Contact Rachel love in April for information.
  • Who do I contact? To book a place please email rachel.love@uhl-tr.nhs.uk stating your name, university and year of study (these days are open to 3rd years only), and which date you would like to attend.  Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.  We look forward to seeing you at one of these events.    

Physiotherapy

  • What do UHL offer? 
    We offer a physiotherapy work experience open day that will give you an insight into physiotherapy and the different areas, working in a hospital and outpatient setting, practical sessions in our physiotherapy gym and a representative from a physiotherapy university speaking about the application process.  The next physiotherapy work experience day will be Saturday 24th February  2018 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.   Please email to complete an application form. 
  •  Who is it aimed at? Those who have a particular interest in pursuing a physiotherapy career.
  • What do I need?
    The assumption is that they would be studying the kind of subjects required for entry onto a physiotherapy degree course.

Cardiac Clinical Diagnostic Department

One day of observational work experinece, to gain knowlege of the day to day work of a cardiac clinical diagnostic department.  Black trousers, white top, lunch, able to transport self to Glenfield Hospital.
