  • Matron Pell  A Victorian portrait of Matron Pell and her Home Hospital team. Employed by the Infirmary, the Home Hospital team were early pioneers in providing care in patients' homes.

  • The Tennis Cup  In the early to mid 1900s, nurses competed annually for a tennis cup. They played on courts outside the nurses home. Here we see Matron Hughes looking on as the winners are presented with their cup in 1939.

  • Clementina Addison  After training and working at the Leicester Infirmary, Clementina Addison volunteered, aged 24 to work on the front in WW1. She died as a result of disease contracted in a field hospiital two years later.

  • Matron Hughes  Matron Dorothy Hughes and her Sisters -  Matron Dorothy Hughes was in charge of the nursing during the second world war years. She is depicted here with her ward sisters in the early 1940s.

  • Gertrude Rogers and her trained nurses  Matron Gertrude Rogers and her trained nurses. Gertrude Rogers came to the Infirmary in1888. Under her leadership nursing standards improved dramatically. She is pictured here with her dog, Nell. Nell was a frequent companion on Matron Rogers rounds. Apparently the sound of her claws scratching on the stone floors gave nurses advance notice that Matron was on her way.

  • Sir Charles Bond (1856 - 1939)  Following a distinguished career at University College London, CJ Bond was appointed as a surgeon in Leicester Infirmary. It has been said that Bond helped to place Leicester and the Infirmary on the international map. He was made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Leicester in 1925.

  • Sir Charles Hayes Marriott (1834 - 1910)  Sir Charles Hayes Marriott was born in Kibworth, where his father and grandfather before him were the village doctors. He was Honorary Surgeon to the Infirmary from 1861 to 1901 and helped to introduce Lister's antispetic technique.

  • Thomas Paget (1768 - 1841)  Thomas Arnold was appointed to the staff of the Infirmary at its opening in 1771. he later became the physician in charge of the new asylum.

  • Thomas Paget (1769-1841)  He was Honorary Surgeon at the Infirmary from 1797 to 1828. Paget was responsible for the introduction of Belladonna in the treatment of eye disease in England.

  • Carving the Turkey  For many years it was traditional for Consultants to come in to the Infirmary at Christmas to carve the turkey. This picture dates back to circa 1890 and shows nursing and domestic staff ready to carry the turkey out to patients.
