• Victorian Ward  This is the earliest photograph of a ward at the Leicester Infirmary. It dates to circa 1870. It is not clear whether the birdcage was hung in the wards as entertaining diversion for patients or as an early gas leak detector!

  • open air balcony circa 1910  Great faith was placed on the value of fresh air to aid the recovery of patients. Many of the wards at the Infirmary had open air balconies on which patients would be encouraged to spend their time. The picture shows the Oliver ward balcony in the Victoria Wing.

  • Gertrude Rogers Ward Ward circa 1940  Situated in the Victoria Wing of the Infirmary and named after its most well know Matrons, the Rogers Ward is laid out in the classic "Nightingale" style with rows of beds either side of the ward and a central nurses' station between.

  • WWI Outpatients Knighton St  To cope with the extra patients that came in to the Royal Infirmary during the first world war, the Outpatients department (Knighton street) was opened up as a temporary ward.
