Mr Giovanni Mariscalco is the Head of Service for cardiac surgery and the Lead Clinician for complex aortic at Glenfield Hospital. As a consultant cardiac surgeon with a practice focused on surgery of the aortic root and thoracic aorta, he has performed more than 2000 major cardiac operations as the responsible surgeon. His areas of expertise include bypass surgery, aortic valve repair/replacement and mitral valve repair/replacement, and complex aortic surgery, including complex repairs of the aortic root, aortic arch and descending thoracic operations. He also performs adult congenital heart operations, including valve-sparing aortic root operations and surgery for anomalous coronary artery disease.
Mr Mariscalco completed his clinical fellowship in cardiac surgery at the Cardiothoracic Division, Heart Centre, of Umeå University Hospital (Sweden) in 2004 and his residency in cardiac surgery at Varese University Hospital (Italy) in 2006. He received his first PhD degree from the University of Umeå (Sweden) in 2008 and the second one in Surgery and Biotechnology from the University of Insubria (Italy) in 2011. He has also covered the Associate Professor of cardiac surgery position at the University of Leicester and the University of Genova (Italy) during 2014 - 2019. Dr Mariscalco is the author and co-author of more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals. And he is a member of the editorial boards of medical journals and has reviewed manuscripts for 30 medical journals.
Finally, Mr Mariscalco is an appointed member of the Adult Cardiac Surgery and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committees of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland.
