Fasting Before Surgery

What to eat or drink before an operation

What food and drinks you can give to babies and children at Leicester Royal Infirmary, before an operation.

For children’s morning or all-day lists:

  • Your child should not take any food or drinks (except water) after 2:00am.
  • From 2:00 to 6:00am they may only drink water.
  • If you are breast-feeding your child, their last feed should be at 4:00am.
  • After 6:00am no drink or chewing gum.
  • After 6:00am normal medication can be taken with a sip of water unless alternative advice is given.
  • After admission, when the order of patients on the operating list is finalised, it may be possible for your child to have a drink of water.  Please ask your nurse if this is possible.
