Paediatric Clinical Immunology

Paediatric Clinical Immunology is based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and is open Monday – Friday 9AM – 

5PM. The department is involved in the assessment, investigation and treatment of patients with suspected and established primary and / or secondary immunodeficiency including:

  1. Antibody deficiency
  2. Combined immune deficiency
  3. Neutrophil defects including CGD
  4. Complement deficiency including HAE
  5. Other primary immune deficiencies including auto-inflammatory disease
  6. Secondary immune deficiencies

The department provides a service to patients from Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland region with a paediatric population of around 215,000, as well as receiving referrals from northern Northamptonshire. We currently look after over 100 patients with immunodeficiency disorders. We share care of children with very complex immune deficiency and post Bone Marrow Transplant with Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital (London) and Great North Children’s Hospital (Newcastle).

Research
The service maintains a secure local database of primary and secondary immune deficiency patients. This allows for regular audit of our practice against local and national standards. We also record information on a national database for primary immune deficiencies.

Education and Training
The service is actively involved in the delivery of educational sessions for various medical and nursing professionals and students.
