Colorectal and Stoma Nurse Specialists

The colorectal and Stoma Nurse Specialists provide a high-quality service to all patients.

Colorectal Team

Where appropriate you will be seen by one of the Colorectal Nurses, they will help you to understand your diagnosis and treatment and support you along your pathway of care. If you have a cancer diagnosis, one of the colorectal nurses will be nominated as your ‘key worker’ and you will have their name and contact details as a point of contact, although there may be occasions when another nurse from the team will speak with you.

Before your operation

If you need a stoma, where possible we will meet you before you come into hospital, either at home or in one of our clinics, to explain what it means to have a stoma. You are welcome to have a family member or carer with you. If you would like to meet someone else who has a stoma, we can arrange that too.

In hospital

After your operation, we will see you while you are in hospital. Here we work with the ward staff and other members of your care team to help you become independent in looking after your stoma.

When you are ready to go home, we will arrange the stoma supplies you need. We will write to your GP and, if necessary, contact your district nurse.

When you go home

We will arrange to visit you at home within 10 days of your discharge from hospital. We will then give you an appointment for one of our local stoma clinics.

Follow-up appointments

You will be offered further stoma clinic appointments during the next few months to check your progress.

Annual check-up

If your stoma is permanent, it is a good idea to have a yearly check-up and we would ask that you ring the community stoma care team, and this can then be arranged

Telephone support

If you have any problems or queries you don’t need to wait until your next appointment. You can ring the stoma care nurses.
