DESMOND Programme

Do you have type 2 diabetes?

You can attend a 6 hour DESMOND (diabetes education and self-management for ongoing and newly diagnosed) course in a local venue of your choice.

Patients who have attended DESMOND remark on the difference it has made to enable them to care for their own diabetes in a positive way.

Courses in English, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, and Bengali are available in your area. Please contact Indira Mistry for more information on 0116 258 4369.

The DESMOND programme team is made up of health professionals, academics and people with diabetes.

The team, which has its national centre at Leicester Royal Infirmary, works to ensure that people with Type 2 diabetes nationwide can access the same quality of vital education from diagnosis, no matter where they are in the country.

Dr Marian Carey, DESMOND Programme national director, says she is delighted that the DESMOND Training Programme has been singled out as an example of excellence.

Dr Carey says,

"If we are really committed to a true partnership in diabetes care between patients and medics, then not only do patients need to gain confidence to self manage their condition, but medical staff need support to reflect on their own way of working.

"Our educators tell us that not only does DESMOND training support them to deliver good quality patient education, it also radically improves their whole approach to diabetes care and the consultations they have with patients on a one-to-one basis. To create training and development with such a wide-ranging effect - this is our real success."

"As one of our trainers has said: "DESMOND has transformed my approach to people with diabetes completely. I realise now that how I worked in the past was much more about my agenda than theirs, I now try to find out what having diabetes means to the individual person - where it fits in for them."
