Our hearing therapist provides information, advice and counselling to help individuals make the most of their hearing and to overcome hearing difficulties. This service may be beneficial to users and non-users of hearing aids. The hearing therapist can offer support and practical ways to help you with auditory adjustment should you experience difficulties adapting to your hearing loss or difficulties using your hearing aid
The service can be accessed via referral from ENT specialist or an audiologist.
"Tinnitus is the perception of noises in the hearing and/or ear which have no external source. It derives from the Latin word for ringing, although tinnitus can be a buzzing, hissing, whistling or other noise. The sensation can be constant or intermittent and it can vary in volume"
It is not always clear what causes tinnitus, but it’s generally agreed that it results from some type of change, either mental or physical in origin.
Some known causes of tinnitus can include:
- Hearing loss
- Exposure to loud noise
- Stress and Anxiety
- Ear Infections
- Ear Wax Build-up
- Glue Ear
- Perforated Eardrum
- Other causes - tinnitus may develop as a result of a head injury, changes in blood flow (e.g. anaemia, high blood pressure), reactions to certain medications, acoustic neuroma (a rare non-cancerous growth that affects the hearing nerve), diabetes, and thyroid disorders.
The hearing therapy team can help those who are suffering with tinnitus, hearing loss or hyperacusis (sensitivity to sound). Our aim is to assist you in finding ways to manage your symptoms.
