Introduction to Lipreading Course

Hearing aids can provide significant help, but they cannot perfectly restore hearing. Lipreading Classes are helpful for people who need that ‘little extra’ to stop that feeling of isolation that having a hearing loss may bring. Therefore, the Hearing Services Department offers a 10 week Introduction to Lipreading Course for service users.

Our ten week Introduction to Lipreading Course enables individuals to develop new communication skills by observing and recognising different lipshapes.

The Introduction to Lipreading Course will help you to:

  • Improve and develop your communication skills by observing and recognising different lipshapes.

  • Discover new communication skills to increase your understanding of conversations in different situations, e.g.  when shopping, during a meeting, going to a restaurant, in groups, when traveling, etc.

  • Find out more about what is available to aid communication in different situations and find out about other support services.

  • Increase your confidence and get the most out of each situation.

  • Meet other people who share the same experiences.

The course is taught by a qualified ATLA teacher (Association of Teachers of Lipreading to Adults) .

The classes are held twice a weeks at the Hearing Services Department, Leicester Royal Infirmary.

To be suitable for this course, you need to have a good understanding of the English language and be able to commit to the course for ten weeks.
