Martin Newey
Consultant Spinal Surgeon
Specialities:
Spine
About Me:
Mr Newey qualified as a doctor in 1986, then trained in orthopaedic surgery between 1992 and 1997 in the South West Thames and West Midlands regions. After completing a Neuro-Orthopaedic Spinal fellowship in Adelaide, South Australia he came to Leicester as a consultant in 1998. He is a Member of the Faculty of Examiners for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and an Assessor for the Intercollegiate MRCS. Combining work with his interest in rugby, he is the pitchside doctor for Leicester Tigers.
His main interest is in common spinal disorders including neck pain, back pain and sciatica. Although he still works as a consultant spinal surgeon he has now retired from operating. He has performed about 1000 spinal procedures and so understands not only the role of surgery but perhaps more importantly when not to operate. Most people with a spinal problem do not actually need surgery. However, they do often want the reassurance that there is nothing seriously wrong with their spine. He can provide an assessment of their spinal problem and then a discussion about how they can improve their symptoms. He will offer advice on the non-surgical management of spinal problems and on those occasions where he feels that surgery is appropriate he will refer accordingly to one of his surgical colleagues.
