Education and Training

Neonatal Simulation Unit photo

The Leicester Neonatal Service has a nationally recognised training program and has a full education program. We are proud of our training reputation.

The Leicester Neonatal Simulation Team

The unit is a national leader in the provision of Neonatal Simulation training allowing trainees to practice the management of emergencies – a bit like pilots do with flight simulators. We currently run one of the UKs leading point of care neonatal simulation training programs. Sessions have continued to run fortnightly during the year and include the whole multidisciplinary team. There have been over 100 staff through our local sessions this year.

Simulation Instructor training

We are the largest trainer of neonatal simulation instructors in the UK and our courses continue to get excellent feedback. We have been commissioned to provide regional simulation instructor training to the East Midlands, all units in the East of England, West Midlands, Shropshire and the Black County. We helped establish a neonatal simulation training program for the whole of Scotland.

Resuscitation Council Courses

Leicester runs one of the UK’s largest Newborn Life Support course centres. 6 NLS courses are run annually in Leicester to ensure that our medical trainees, nursing team and midwives are trained in resuscitation to a high standard.

Consultants in Leicester were involved in the development of the Advanced Resuscitation of the Newborn Infant Course in 2015 and this course runs regularly in Leicester.

Medical and nursing professionals who would like to come on one of our simulation courses, NLS or ARNI courses should contact courseadmin@uhl-tr.nhs.uk.

Training for Doctors and ANNPs

We have over 8 hours of structured training for all of our medical team. This includes educational meetings, our quality improvement program, a structured training afternoon on a Wednesday, practical skills workshops, journal clubs and our renowned simulation program.

All our staff are welcome to come to any of our training sessions.

Training for Nursing staff

All of our sessions are open to our nursing team, and every simulation session is run for doctors and nurses of all grades. We have a supportive nursing education team and close links with De Montfort University and Leicester University.

We offer an integrated set of degree modules that take new members of nursing staff through a bespoke educational pathway. This includes:

  • Foundation of Nursing degree modules,
  • Specialist Nursing modules for High Dependency Neonatal Care,
  • Specialist Nursing modules for Neonatal Intensive Care.

We have an amazing Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program: we currently have a team of ANNPs who have completed Masters degrees and specialist prescribing modules. The neonatal team was involved in the development of the ANNP course at the University of Sheffield, and teach and examine for this course.

Training for Undergraduates

We have medical and nursing students from local universities and run tutorials and ward based teaching sessions. We have excellent nursing mentorship and for medical students run an extremely popular 'Student Selected Component' placement.
