Blood Sciences - Immunology

Our immunology department carries out investigations of the body’s immune system and its role in infectious diseases, allergies, parasitic infestations, tumour growth, transplantation, autoimmunity and immunodeficiencies.

The work is particularly important in the monitoring of HIV infection and the diagnosis of haematological malignancies and cancers.

All of our immunology services are consultant-led and are based at Leicester Royal Infirmary in a purpose-built laboratory, staffed by experienced and qualified scientists.

The laboratory analyses approximately 140,000 samples per year. Clinics are held on a regular basis in general immunology, paediatric immunology, severe auto-immune disease and allergy. There is also an adult home therapy service, run by the immunology specialist nurses for patients on immunoglobulin replacement therapy.
