Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Patients On Exercise Bikes

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a programme of exercise and education, for patients with a chronic respiratory disease.

Each programme is individually tailored for our patients.

It is suitable for patients with a variety of respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis.

The benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation

It will not heal your lungs but it will help you to be able to do more, such as walking and daily tasks.

Pulmonary rehabilitation will help to:

  • Reduce your levels of breathlessness.

  • Help you to improve your general health and level of fitness.

  • Improve your ability to carry out the daily activities that are important to you.

  • Help you understand about your respiratory disease.

  • Help you to control the symptoms of your condition.

  • Improve your levels of confidence and quality of life.

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation teams have been working in conjunction with the Cardiac Rehabilitation team to develop a breathlessness rehabilitation programme.  This programme combines aspects from each department to create a comprehensive Rehabilitation Programme for the breathless patient.

During the pandemic, the PR team developed and provided rehabilitation for patients who have been affected by Covid, which is also a combination of individually based exercises and education based on previous rehabilitation programmes.
