UHL Clinical Education Courses

The Clinical Education Conference Service supports and help to deliver bespoke and mandatory courses accredited with CPD points to the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Royal College of Anaesthetics and the Royal College of Physicians.  

We also facilitate conference with JAG accreditation and UHL internal conferences. All of the course Directors are employed by UHL and they are able to bring in faculty from other trusts.

The courses attract candidates from Saudi Arabia, Malta, Australia, Hong Kong and many European Countries.

Basic Practical Skills in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (BPSO&G)

The RCOG Basic Practical Skills course (BPS) is designed to introduce trainees to safe surgical techniques and obstetric clinical skills, in a structured workshop environment. The course is standardised to ensure common objectives, content structure and assessment methods are followed and can be linked to the RCOG Training Portfolio and OSATS.


Basic Skills in Colonoscopy

Course for Higher Trainees wishing to gain or improve their skills in Colonoscopy. This is an intensive, interactive, practical course covering the theoretical basis of performing a safe colonoscopy and safe and effective peri-endoscopy management. The course includes a series of small group and one-to-one teaching sessions, videos, hands-on model work and supervised endoscopy.


Basic Surgical Skills (BSS)

Over two highly practical days, you will learn a range of essential basic surgical skills and techniques within a controlled workshop environment.


Cardiac Anaesthesia Study Day

Designed to aid delegates in understanding the basics and pathophysiology of heart disease thus developing strategies to manage cardiac patients perioperatively. Guidance will also be given in different methods & techniques to manage patients undergoing cardiac surgery


Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP)

CCrISP is an interactive course that explores the skills and knowledge needed to look after surgical patients including those who are deteriorating or at risk of doing so.


Chest Drain

This full day course is designed to teach the theoretical and practical skills necessary for the safe insertion of Wide-bore and Seldinger type chest drains. It also covers the management of common pleural diseases.


Continuing Medical Education – Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Management

The CME in anaesthesia, intensive care and pain management event is aimed to provide a cost effective and convenient platform for better understanding of the topics central to the speciality interest. The programme is designed so as to provide insight into current topics and challenges in day-to-day practice.


Core Ultrasound in Intensive Care (CUSIC)

CUSIC (accredited by the Intensive Care Society) is a training pathway for achieving accreditation in point of care ultrasound for intensive care. The competencies include ultrasound guided vascular access, lung ultrasound and basic abdominal ultrasound.


Decision Making in Tracheostomy Care

This lecture series course discusses the precipitating factors and alternatives for a tracheostomy along with ethics, patient management and long term care planning and decannulation. Suitable for medical trainees, nurses and physiotherapists form related areas.


Difficult Airway Day 

One day hands on practical session with 12 stations covering all aspects of difficult airway management. Includes ORSIM bronchoscopy simulator, cricothyroidotomy, laryngoscopy and ultrasound. Great course for learning or refreshing techniques.


Glenfield Acute Respiratory Medicine

Respiratory diseases contribute to a significant part of the acute medical take. This meeting is an essential update on the diagnosis and management of a variety of challenging respiratory emergencies presenting to consultants and trainees with “front door” responsibilities. The meeting is supported by local and national experts in the field. 


Focused Intensive Care Echocardiography (FICE) 

FICE (accredited by the Intensive Care Society) is a practical solution to training in focused transthoracic echo for adult intensive care.


Foundation Ultrasound course

This basic level course introduces the candidate to FAST & FATE scanning, probe handling, needling and US guided central venous cannulation techniques through lectures, demonstration and hands on practical scanning.


Obstetric Anaesthetic Revalidation Day

This is a comprehensive one day course developed to fulfil revalidation needs of the obstetric anaesthetist and the anaesthetist who covers obstetrics on call but who does not necessarily have daytime sessions.


One Lung

One Lung is a national course for thoracic anaesthesia developed by experts from all over UK and run across multiple centres. The emphasis on this one day course is on developing practical skills through training on skill stations and clinical scenarios. All the techniques are evidence based and peer-reviewed.


Paediatric Anaesthesia Meeting

International speakers provide continuous medical education on a range of peri-operative and clinical topics in paediatric anaesthesia


Pain Management Study Day

Course aims to provide and promote understanding of the physiology and management strategies for pain for inpatients, special patient populations and multidisciplinary pain.


Polypectomy 

This is one-day intensive practical course using the WIMAT porcine model of endoscopic polypectomy. The course provides an overview and practical experience of how to perform safe and effective polypectomy. Hands on training will include practical polypectomy, tattooing, endoclip placement and endoscopic mucosal resection. 


Severe Acute Respiratory Failure Study Day 

A one day course comprising of lectures from national experts in respiratory failure and ECMO for patients in intensive care. This study day is aimed and senior trainees and consultants.


Structured Oral Exam FRCA

In this 3 day course delegates will receive tutorials in clinical sciences to include anatomy, physics, physiology & pharmacology, full SOE exams to mirror the exam for each candidate and lectures on data interpretation


Teaching Improvement Course

Course tailored to learning effective and practical teaching skills for delivering a clinical education through discussion, practical session, demonstration and reflection.


Train the Colonoscopy Trainers

This course is interactive and relies on delegate participation. There is a day of classroom/ seminar and model based teaching aimed at developing a training framework to apply to endoscopic training. Seminars, model work and group teaching are used. Day 2 is used to apply the knowledge from day 1 teaching in a clinical environment.


Tran-oesophageal Echocardiography (TOE)

Our course will provide the delegate the opportunity to do a basic TOE examination, gain enough knowledge to obtain further experience, and also to recognise his/her limitations.  The course delegates include Anaesthetists, Intensivists, Adult Cardiologists, Paediatric Cardiologists, Cardiac Surgeons, Radiologists and Echocardiography Technicians.


Ultrasound in Perioperative Care

Attending delegates will be able to improve their knowledge about the morphology, basic and advance use of ultrasound guided techniques in perioperative area such as Intensive care, A&E, Regional Anaesthesia; and ultrasound guided injection techniques.


Upper GI

Course for endoscopy trainees wishing to gain/ improve their skills in GI Endoscopy. This is an intensive, interactive, practical course covering the theoretical basis of performing a safe gastroscopy and safe effective peri-endoscopy management.
