Women’s and Children’s

The women’s and children’s research team covers four distinct specialty areas:

  • Children’s

The children’s research team supports a large portfolio of research studies for conditions that affect children and young people, from birth up to their 19th birthday. We work with a range of industry partners and collaborators to lead and deliver pioneering research by increasing understanding of disease and evaluating new treatments and pathways, to ensure we are giving children the best possible care. We do this by providing a high quality research service to deliver a full spectrum of early to late phase clinical trials.

We currently support over 20 different children’s specialties across Leicester’s Hospitals, and continue to integrate and develop other areas. Our Research Space opened in June 2017. It has a dedicated, purpose-designed facility for children and young people who are taking part in research studies. The facility includes specialist sensory equipment, an interactive floor projection system and a 3D interactive distraction system.

We operate a hub and spoke approach by integrating research into clinical areas outside of Research Space – including wards, outpatients, intensive care, and the children’s emergency department.

The children’s research team has an excellent record of success in research excellence, with high levels of recruitment and retention.

  • Neonatal

Some of our current work in neonatal research is on deferred cord clamping, speed of increasing feeds, optical coherence tomography, treatment of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn and an inotropes and infection. Forthcoming studies will look at infection and chronic lung disease, preventing neonatal bowel problems, reducing line infections and treating patent ductus arteriosus.

  • Women’s Health (including obstetrics and gynaecology)

Women’s health research encompasses the wide range of issues that face women at various times of their life, including fertility, pregnancy, gynaecology cancers, menopause and beyond.  The staff within the team work on many different studies that have impacted on patient care and treatment, ensuring that the women of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are provided with the best evidence-based approaches.

  • Genetics

Our clinical genetics service in Leicester comprises specialist doctors and genetic counsellors. We assess and advise people and their families about their risk of inheriting a genetic condition, which includes rare conditions and cancers.

It may sometimes be challenging to make a specific diagnosis for a family or person. A genetic assessment can help them to understand the possible diagnoses and treatment options. We encourage patients to actively participate in suitable research projects that may assist us in making a diagnosis for them and to understand more about the genetic condition and its management.
