National Centre for Drug Adherence Testing

Leicester’s Hospitals has developed world leading expertise in the measurement of prescribed medications in the urine. By measuring the quantity and types of medicine in the urine, we can determine whether a patient is taking their medication correctly (known as ‘adherence’).

Many studies have found that non-adherence to medications is a critical factor in poor blood press control. However, part of the reason for the lack of progress to improve adherence has been the absence of a clinically objective measure to identify patients who are not taking their medicines as prescribed.

In response to this pressing issue, a team of doctors and scientists from Leicester’s Hospitals, together with the University of Leicester, set up the National Centre for Adherence Testing (NCAT).

Our NCAT service is used by over 30 NHS Trusts across the UK, and researchers from Europe and the USA. Many of our users strongly agree that our NCAT service benefits their clinical practice and reduces the cost and time of unnecessary investigations and escalations in treatment.

NCAT is led by Drs Pankash Gupta and Prashanth Patal, and is co-ordinated by Carole Jones.
