The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Leicester Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is part of the NIHR* and hosted by the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, in partnership with the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group.

NIHR Clinical Research Facilities (CRFs) support the delivery of early-phase and complex studies in purpose built facilities in NHS hospitals. The NIHR has awarded £161 million over five years to 28 CRFs across England.

At the NIHR Leicester CRF, we provide the people, expertise, space, and equipment to conduct world-class experimental medicine research and early phase clinical trials. This can include intensive trials and first-in-man studies. Our facilities are integrated into clinical areas within specialties to provide a seamless link from the laboratory bench to bedside.

We offer expertise in many specialities, including:

  • Cardiovascular
  • Respiratory
  • Cancer
  • Type 2 Diabetes and Lifestyle
  • Renal

Our management hub is 'Research Space', a dedicated research facility at Leicester Royal Infirmary. We are supported by an acute platform team, imaging, and a physiological measurements and exercise interventions service.

We are an active member of the UK Clinical Research Facilities (CRF) Network. The UK Clinical CRF Network supports CRFs to deliver clinical trials of the highest standard and promotes the UK as the place for investment in and economic growth from health research. Read more about the UK CRF Network
