UHL Research and Innovation Awards 2023

We are so proud of the quality and quantity of research and innovation that is designed, delivered and managed at our Trust and in our NIHR research infrastructure. To help us celebrate this in a formal manner, we are delighted to unveil a new awards programme for Research and Innovation (R&I) at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL).

The awards evening will take place on Wednesday 18 January 2023. Entry to the event will be by invitation only, and priority tickets will be given to nominators and nominees of shortlisted entries.

Please find below more information on how to make your nominations, the inclusion/exclusion criteria, and the all-important awards categories.

Overview

For each category, nominators will be asked to describe:

  • How creative or innovative the project, initiative, or programme of work is
  • What obstacles or barriers the individual or team needed to overcome in their work
  • What impact their work has had or could have in the future – whether this is on patient experience, patient outcomes, or the way research and innovation is designed or delivered
  • The extent to which the individual or team stands out as a champion or ambassador for clinical research and innovation
  • How the individual or team has exemplified one or more of the Trust values

 

Inclusion/exclusion criteria

  • The achievement, contribution or activities outlined in the nomination will have occurred in 2021 or 2022
  • Judges cannot nominate or be nominated. Meet our judging panel.
  • An individual/team cannot nominate themselves
  • Individuals must be employed by UHL, hold an honorary contract with UHL, or be affiliated with the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre, Clinical Research Facility or Patient Recruitment Centre. We regret that entries will NOT be accepted from the NIHR CRN East Midlands, NIHR ARC East Midlands or NIHR RDS East Midlands.

 

Submission process

Entries will only be accepted via the official awards form.

The deadline for entries is 17:00, Friday 28 October 2022. Entries submitted after this date will not go forward to the shortlisting panel.


Awards categories

1. Research and innovation team of the year

This award recognises a team who has designed, delivered, or supported the delivery of, research or an innovation at UHL or in part of our NIHR infrastructure. In doing so, they have embodied the Trust values to truly go above and beyond what is expected of them.


2. Outstanding achievement in research by an individual

This award recognises an individual who has designed, delivered, or supported the delivery of, research or an innovation at UHL or in part of our NIHR infrastructure. In doing so, they have embodied the Trust values to truly go above and beyond what is expected of them.


3. Newcomer of the year

This award recognises the achievements of (1) an early career researcher or (2) a member of a research delivery team with less than two years’ experience in research, who has made a significant contribution to their team or speciality beyond what would be reasonably expected of them for their level of experience.


4. Putting patients first

This award recognises an individual or team who has gone the extra mile for patients, carers, service users, volunteers or members of the public to involve or engage them in research or an innovation. The nominee may have made a significant contribution using innovative approaches to involvement, co-production, or shared decision-making. Nominees are especially welcome whose work has widened participation and reached under-served communities.


5. Unsung hero

This award recognises an individual or team that has done the most to enable clinical research or an innovation at UHL or in part of our NIHR infrastructure. Through their dedicated work in a non-clinical support role, they may have improved performance or improved the quality and standards of the research and innovation conducted at the Trust.


​​​​​​​6. Tony Gershlick memorial award for impact of clinical research and innovation on healthcare

This award, dedicated in memory of Professor Tony Gershlick, is for the individual or team who has made the biggest impact on healthcare through clinical research or an innovation. Nominees will have made measurable contributions to the health of our community through changes to policy and/or clinical practices as a result of their work.


We will keep these pages updated with our judging panel and any changes to the programme. Following the awards, you will find all the videos of the finalists and a summary of the winners and highly commended entries.
