Children's Asthma studies

DOMINICA asthma study logo

DOMINICA

Who is it for? Children and young people (aged 6 to17) who have uncontrolled asthma.

Why? To help find another effective therapy option for young people with severe asthma. We want to explore the safety and efficacy of Benralizumab in this age group. Benralizumab is a biologic known to be effective and safe for use in adults with severe eosinophilic asthma.

Participants in the study will be randomized to receive study drug or placebo for at least 4 months and may then proceed to receive study drug in the open-label extension period if they have an exacerbation or if the overall number of required asthma exacerbations in the study is met.

TREAT

Who is it for? Children and young people aged 6-16 years with problematic severe asthma, which is difficult to control.

Why? There are two medicines licensed for use as an additional treatment in children with severe asthma. We want to know whether mepolizumab is at least as good as omalizumab in reducing asthma attacks in children with severe asthma.

In this study, children and young people will firstly receive a check to see if they are taking their inhaler treatment as prescribed, using electronic monitoring. All children that continue to have asthma attacks and persistent symptoms despite taking their inhalers, and those who fail to take their inhalers adequately despite our best efforts to achieve this, can take part in the next part of the study

Children will then either receive omalizumab or mepolizumab for one year. We will compare the effectiveness of each treatment and assess change in symptoms,  and the child’s and family’s quality of life.
