Children's COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Research

ISARIC COVID-19 study logo

ISARIC – International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium.

Who is it for? Children and young people admitted to hospital with proven COVID-19, and/or also those being treated for Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS).

Why? ISARIC aims to collect relevant, anonymised data from the participant which includes demographic information, signs and symptoms, treatment given during admission, any laboratory test results and more. As this study only collects already available data there is no need for consent to take place. By addressing the most important questions during the current epidemic, ISARIC will generate new knowledge, increase the availability of this information and ultimately save lives.

GenOMICC – Genetics of Mortality in Critical Care

Who is it for? Children with severe illness who are admitted to intensive care (ICU) with conditions including:

  • COVID-19 (coronavirus)
  • Influenza (flu)Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (a type of respiratory virus)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Pneumonia
  • Burns
  • Cellulitis (infection in the deeper layers of skin)
  • and other emerging infections

Why? Our genes (or DNA) determine how vulnerable we are to critical illness. If we could find the genes that cause some people to be more vulnerable, we may be able to develop better treatments for patients in the future. To do this we need a single DNA sample from lots of critically ill patients with a range of selected conditions.
