The Children’s Cardiac Ward will be moving from Glenfield Hospital to Leicester Royal Infirmary on Saturday, 7 August. If your child has an appointment around this date, the Trust advises that you contact the ward before their admission to check which hospital they should attend.
To help make you aware of what to expect when you or your child visits the new ward, some helpful information has been provided below.
What will the ward be like, and where will it be located?
The new ward will be very similar to Ward 30 at Glenfield Hospital, with the main difference being it will be brand new and a lot bigger in size. It will have:
- 17 beds
- a high dependency unit
- teenage area
- waiting area
- playroom
The new ward will be on Level 1 of the Kensington Building. It will be called the Children’s Cardiac Ward and be accompanied by:
- Paediatric Intensive Care Unit
- Outpatients and Diagnostic Department
- Catheter Lab
- Cardiac Theatre
- Parent Accommodation
Due to the move, other key services such as X-rays and CT scans will now be easily accessible for the ward’s patients, as they are also based on the Leicester Royal Infirmary site (in the Balmoral and Windsor buildings).
To find out more about the location of the hospital and the Kensington Building, please visit our Travelling to the Leicester Royal Infirmary page on our website.
What will stay the same?
The service provided will be no different to what was given at Glenfield Hospital. The ward will function in the same way as it did before, with patients and the standard of care being the top priority.
Our experienced cardiac nurses and doctors will be moving over to our Leicester Royal Infirmary site too, alongside our play specialists, physiotherapists, cardiac liaison nurses and healthcare assistants.
Patients will still come into the ward one day prior to their procedure and have their pre-operation bloods and scans before being admitted to the ward. On the morning of admission, our patient and/or carer will still need to contact the ward to check whether there is a bed available.
What parent facilities will there be?
There will be parent rooms available on the ward, however, there is only a limited number and they will predominately be used by parents of children needing high dependency care. Due to the small number available, beds for parents will also provided at the child’s bedside.
Within the ward, to help cater for the parents staying over, there is a parents lounge with kitchen facilities and a quiet room should it be needed.
What food will be available?
The will be no change to the food on offer - this will be the same as the food provided on Ward 30. The child (or parent depending on age) will receive a menu with several meal options, and they will be able to choose a meal of their choice on each day of their stay.
Due to the current Covid-19 situation, parents have been provided food. However, this will begin to change in line with Government guidance and the easing of lockdown. Whenever a change is made, we will endeavour to update you accordingly.
