Patient Population: 

Children and adults from all over the East Midlands (catchment population around 4.5 million), born with and treated for all forms of congenital heart disease. 

The Cardiology team also care for children with acquired heart disease such as Kawasaki disease, and cardiomyopathies, as well as children and adults with genetic disorders such as Marfan’s syndrome and other disorders which can affect the cardiovascular system.


Research interests and experience:

A strong research portfolio, with experience as a CI in commercial clinical trials and PI in non-commercial studies.

Current research interests include:

  • The genetic basis of congenital heart disease (major BHF programme grant holder)
  • The genetics of bicuspid aortic valve
  • Novel applications of advanced cross-sectional imaging (CT / MRI / and 3D echocardiography) in the management of congenital heart disease
  • Novel therapeutic agents for children with heart disease 
  • UK’s foremost Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Centre providing support for patients from across the country and abroad
  • Cardiac bypass surgery
  • Novel interventional cardiology procedures and devices
