Patient Population:

Research interests and experience:

Academic endeavour is an important part of the Children’s ED. They are currently in involved in 2 large national Randomised Controlled Trials and are part of 3 international studies lead by the Pediatric Emergency Research Network (PERN). They were a submitting site for research published in “Pediatrics” demonstrating the UK is an international leader in the management of bronchiolitis.

The Paediatric Observation Priority Score (POPS) developed at the Leicester Royal Infirmary is now used in many Emergency Departments throughout the country and was cited by the NIHR as a case study in implementation and dissemination. A NIHR funded study examining its utility in smaller Emergency Departments and urgent care centres is currently ongoing in North Manchester.

The department is also strong on knowledge translation and ensures its guidance is based on best evidence. Leicester Royal Infirmary, through East Midlands Emergency Medicine Educational Media (EM3) and its nursing and medical staff, has a strong social media presence and is recognised  worldwide for its interest in evidence based practice.
