Patient Population:
Leicester Neonatal Service is the lead centre within the Central Newborn Network, caring for over 1600 babies a year born as early as 23 weeks gestation. This includes:
- infants needing surgery
- those with challenging medical needs
- in conjunction with obstetric colleagues, babies born to mothers who themselves have a complex medical diagnosis
- infants both pre and post admission with a cardiac anomaly in conjunction with Glenfield Hospital
Admissions are both ‘in-house’ and referred from within the network and the wider environ, often for expert management when the infant is critically ill.
Along with their clinical expertise, dedicated transport and outreach teams, renowned simulation programme and strong links with Leicester and De Montfort Universities the neonatal service has a well-established, well-respected research team.
Research interests and experience:
Leicester’s Neonatal Research Service has been running for over 15 years. They have a dedicated, highly research active, multi-disciplinary team with CI and PI experience and a large research portfolio. It is usual for at least five or six studies to be running concurrently and co-recruitment is welcomed within the confines of individual protocols. In a recent peer review the research service was commended for taking an active role in recruiting to multicentre research trials and the large portfolio was described as ‘a significant achievement’.
Areas of interest include:
- Innovative techniques and technologies aimed at refining neonatal care for very preterm infants
- Interventions to improve outcome for the moderate and late preterm population, a group which can have significant long-term morbidity
- Advancing treatments for term babies who have suffered a significant event around the time of or after birth in order to improve overall prognosis
