Endoscopy Unit

We are building a new Endoscopy Unit as part of our development of Leicester General Hospital into a local and regional hub for planned care.

This dedicated facility will see around 13,000 patients each year once it opens in 2025, carrying out outpatient endoscopy procedures. Find out more about what an endoscopy is on the NHS website.

The new Endoscopy facility will create extra procedure rooms and replace two existing endoscopy procedure rooms at the Leicester General Hospital and provide two extra rooms. The Unit will be used for outpatient appointments, and can be used in two different ways:

• Diagnosing patients: This means using an endoscope to look inside the patient’s body to work out why someone is ill or to check on their condition. This will include screening patients for bowel cancer.
• Treating patients (also known as therapeutic endoscopy): Sometimes, we use endoscopes to treat illnesses of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. Find out more on YourHealth about what to expect if you are going to be having an endoscopy.

Our Endoscopy Unit will not be used for emergency patients, who will continue to be treated at the Leicester Royal Infirmary or Glenfield Hospital.
