Leicester Hospitals Charity (LHC) has celebrated two wins at the VAL (Voluntary Action Leicester) Awards 2024 this year.

The VAL Awards took place on Friday 18 October, at the historic Grand Hotel in Leicester, recognising the extraordinary efforts of local organisations and individuals who have made a significant difference to the lives of people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Leicester Hospitals Charity, which supports patients, carers, and NHS staff in Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland won the ‘City Charity of the year’ category as well as the overall ‘Charity of the year’ award.

The event was a chance to celebrate the positive impact the charity has had on Leicester’s Hospitals. In the last year alone, the charity has played an integral part in the opening of a new Chemotherapy Suite, enabling 4000 more treatments per year and the Mackay Wellbeing Garden at Leicester Royal Infirmary, to give hardworking staff a beautiful outdoor space to decompress during and after a busy shift. The charity also partnered with other charities and communities to fund equipment such as the Da Vinci Xi robot for robotic-assisted surgery which was made possible through the Samworth Foundation. The Emma Shaw Foundation also worked with Leicester Hospitals Charity to fund numerous items to support the treatment and care of cancer patients.

Sunita Patel, Head of charity at LHC, said: “We are extremely proud and grateful to have received ‘City Charity of the Year’ and ‘Overall Charity of the Year’. It was such an overwhelming moment of pride and appreciation of the privilege I have leading the team at Leicester Hospitals Charity.

“It was a true honour to be chosen given all the worthy causes in our city and from the incredible charities shortlisted alongside us. We want to thank everyone who has supported us and our cause, you are all making great things happen for patients and staff of Leicester's Hospitals!”

VAL Kevin Allen-Khimani, CEO of VAL, added: “The calibre of entries for this year’s VAL Awards was outstanding, and we feel the shortlist showcases the dedication and resilience of the charity sector over the past year. These organisations and individuals represent the very best of our community, and we couldn’t be prouder to celebrate their achievements.”

Leicester Hospitals Charity delivers targeted fundraising campaigns to drive donations and provide additional resources, assets and skills which link closely with the strategic aims of Leicester’s Hospitals and the broader strategic aims of NHS healthcare in the East Midlands.
