Leicester’s Hospitals Clinical Imaging team will be managing services for these three scanning procedures at community hospitals in Loughborough, Melton, Rutland, Market Harborough, Coalville and Hinckley.

X-ray, Ultrasound and MRI scans are currently undertaken by private providers at these community hospitals, so this new partnership will not only see the services brought back into the NHS, but will also reduce overall expenditure.

Sue Sutton, Alliance Manager, explains: “Planning is well under way for the transfer of service. This affects the way the service is managed but not the referral process for patients. Patients should not notice any change and will be referred via their GP as usual.

“The main benefit for patients is that they will have a wider choice in where they have their scan, often much closer to home than in the larger hospitals in the city. X-ray and Ultrasound will continue to be provided from existing Community Hospitals. MRI at Loughborough will be delivered from the National Centre of Sports and Exercise Medicine and Hinckley will continue to use a mobile MRI service.”

Not only will there be more choice for patients, but the change will also create more opportunities for Alliance imaging staff offering them more structure and better progression routes within a bigger team.

Cathy Lea, Lead General Manager for Imaging Services at Leicester’s Hospitals, added: “Everyone has embraced the change and we look forward to welcoming the wider team when they transfer over to us. This is just the start of our overall strategy for Imaging, feeding into our Trust’s 5 Year Plan to further develop diagnostic imaging hubs in the community.”
