New Cancer Information App for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland launched on World Cancer Day

4 February 2022

People living with and beyond cancer in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) are set to benefit from support and advice at their fingertips thanks to a new app.

Launched on World Cancer Day (4 February 2022) the LLR Cancer Information app has been developed by local NHS cancer specialists to support local people living with cancer as well as their families, friends and carers.

The app includes information about treatments and side effects together with health and wellbeing support. It also offers a range of information on how to access local community support as well as more practical advice on topics like money and finance.

Jane Pickard, Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, said: “We know that a cancer diagnosis impacts all aspects of a person’s life as well as their family’s. People living with cancer often need more than just clinical support before, during and after cancer treatment and also in other aspects of their life which is why we’ve developed this app. Whether it’s financial, diet and exercise, hair loss or psychological support the app offers advice and signposting to help support the person in a holistic way.”

The app was developed in partnership between patients, clinicians, people from the voluntary sector and local NHS organisations, including University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and the LLR CCGs.

Dr Paul Danaher, GP and clinical lead for cancer for the LLR Clinical Commissioning Groups, said:“There is so much support available for people living with and beyond cancer, but it can be hard to know where to start looking. We have designed this app with local people in mind, so that you can find support groups and services based in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, as well as more general advice and information.

“We hope that people affected by cancer, their friends, families and carers will find this app really helpful in navigating the wealth of resources that are available.”

By 2030 it is estimated that there will be over 50,000 people living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The LLR Cancer Information app is free to download and available for mobile and tablet devices on the Apple and Android app stores.
