Black History Month: Rolicia's story

Rolicia Black History Month
Black History Month Rolicia

As we embrace Black History Month, I am reminded of the power of storytelling and the importance of reclaiming our narratives. My name is Rolicia Spence-Cumberbatch, and I proudly come from Hairouna, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines – a small yet vibrant nation in the Caribbean, known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and resilient people.

Growing up in St. Vincent, I was surrounded by the warmth of our community and the vibrant expressions of our heritage. Our festivals burst with colour and music, reflecting the rhythms of our African ancestry and the diverse influences that have shaped our island. From the lively beats of calypso and soca to the enchanting melodies of our folk songs, every note tells a story of our past of struggle, triumph, and unbreakable spirit.

In our culinary traditions, you’ll find flavours that celebrate our agricultural bounty – dishes that not only nourish the body, but also connect us to our land and our history. Each meal shared among family and friends becomes a gathering of stories, laughter, and love, reinforcing the bonds that unite us.

Though we may be small in size, we are large and mighty in spirit. Our history is marked by resilience; we have faced challenges with courage and determination. The stories of our ancestors, who fought for freedom and justice, inspire us to continue their legacy today. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, we carry their strength within us, reminding ourselves that we are part of a larger tapestry of history.

Black History Month is not only a time to reflect on our past, but also an opportunity to celebrate our present and envision our future. It is a time to uplift our voices, share our experiences, and acknowledge the contributions of individuals who have paved the way for us. Each of us has a unique story, and together, these narratives create a rich mosaic that reflects the beauty of our diversity.

In reclaiming our narrative this Black History Month, I choose to honour my heritage, celebrate my ancestors, and continue their legacy through the care I provide. I am proud to be part of a profession where I can give back to others, just as those who came before me paved the way for my success. My journey as a nurse is a tribute to them – a reminder that through our stories, through our actions, we continue to shape the future, for ourselves and for those who will follow.

As we honour our past, let us also look towards a future filled with hope and possibility. Let us continue to support one another, recognising that our strength lies in our unity. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to share their story.

Happy Black History Month! Let’s celebrate our rich heritage, embrace our uniqueness, and inspire each other to make a lasting impact in our community and beyond.
