Leicester paediatrician named as HSJ Rising Star

An innovative paediatric doctor from Leicester has been named on the top 25 list of Health Service Journal (HSJ) Rising Stars list.

The accolade was awarded to Dr Damian Roland, previously a NIHR research fellow and now a senior registrar  in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Leicester’s Hospitals and University of Leicester, who was also named as one of 50 leading medics, policy makers and healthcare managers on the HSJ Top Innovators list in November 2013.


HSJ Rising Stars aims to celebrate the healthcare leaders of tomorrow and influencers of today. The judges of were looking for individuals who are making brave decisions to improve healthcare and shape its future.


The long list, which highlighted individuals from across clinical or non-clinical areas of healthcare sector, was created during November from nominations made by readers via the HSJ website and Twitter.


The judging panel reviewed the list considering how much impact, change, progression and leadership the individuals have had. The final 25 were decided upon at a judging evening held at the HSJ offices and announced at the end of December.


Dr Roland is co-director of QuackApps, which produces bespoke mobile and website enabled products, including an app of the Paediatric Observation Priority Score (POPS), a checklist that demonstrates an acuity score of seriously ill children using data that is easy to collect developed at Leicester Hospitals.


As one of the core team for NHS Change Day, a campaign that used social media to share 189,000 pledges to create the biggest day of collective action for improvement in the history of the NHS, Dr Roland and the team won a global challenge for management innovation prize from Harvard Business Review and McKinsey.


Dr Roland said: “It is nice to be recognised in this way but I hope it furthermore represents the talents of those I work with who have helped encourage, support and implement the ideas that I have had.”


Dr Roland is also operational director of the Paediatric Emergency Medicine Leicester Academic Group in conjunction with Dr. Ffion Davies a research group dedicated to improving the care of ill or injured children.


He also founded Running Horse Group, a network of paediatricians who aim to inspire the child health workforce to deliver quality services that delight children, young people and their families.


What the judges said: “He stands out as somebody who is ambitious and he nurtures other young leaders. Definitely a rising star for the future of the NHS - he’s someone with great impact and someone who is going to go far.
