We are pleased to be one of three East Midlands’ organisations to have achieved a Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award for proactively demonstrating our advocacy for the Armed Forces community.
Press release

We, along with the University of Lincoln and Nottinghamshire based SkillForce, have all received awards and will be invited to a formal presentation event later this year.

The Defence ERS encourages employers to support Defence and inspire others to do the same. The scheme encompasses Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards for employer organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to Defence and the Armed Forces community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.

We, along with the organisations awarded, all employ at least one person from the Armed Forces community such as a veteran, reservist or Cadet Force adult volunteer and have previously signed the Armed Forces Covenant.

We were awarded the Gold Award because we recently signed up to the ‘Step in to Health’ programme.  This is a pledge set up by the NHS nationally that creates a dedicated path for the Armed Forces community to access the numerous career opportunities available in the health service.

We also have an agreed special leave policy which covers leave for the Reserve Forces and mobilisation, as well as setting up a Reserve Forces Support Group that meets twice per year to provide mutual support to both reserve and veteran colleagues and consider further ways in which the organisation can promote and celebrate Defence.

Karamjit Singh CBE, Chairman at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, said: “We are extremely proud to receive this prestigious award in recognition of our support for the Armed Forces community.  It is important that we are able to meet the needs of this community, both as employers and in the services we provide. This accolade serves to underline our on-going commitment to support those who serve or have served in our Armed Forces”.

John Wilson, the Ministry of Defences Regional Employer Engagement Director for the East Midlands, said: “This is the first time three organisations in the East Midlands have achieved a Gold Award in the same year. Each of those awarded are dedicated to supporting and promoting the Armed Forces community and I look forward to continuing to work alongside each of the award winners in the future.”
