Imaging department at Leicester’s Hospitals gives people chance to discover more

The Imaging Departments at Leicester General Hospital will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday 10 November, to give local people a behind-the-scenes look into the diverse range of Imaging techniques and careers available within the specialist departments.

The multidisciplinary team made up of over 500 staff offer diagnostic imaging services such as x-ray, CT and MRI scanning, ultrasound scanning, breast screening and forensic imaging.

Imaging services are offered across all three of Leicester’s Hospitals acute sites, as well as working within the community, where possible, to provide examinations closer to home.

Cathy Lea, Lead General Manager for Imaging at Leicester’s Hospitals, said:  “We are one of the largest imaging departments in the country. Every month, our teams perform over 2,000 angiograms and fluoroscopic examinations, 4,000 MRI scans, 7,000 CT scans, 7,000 ultrasound scans, and 23,000 X-Rays. Our Breast Imaging team also offer screening to over 40,000 women per year and perform over 4,000 mammograms per month.”  

During the day, visitors will have the chance to meet staff, tour the facilities and see demonstrations of how diagnostic tests and investigations are performed. There will be an opportunity to visit the Imaging Department and the Breast Imaging Department.

There will be a mix of clinical and non-clinical staff available to answer questions on what it is like to work in the various roles within Imaging. Representatives from the University of Derby will be on hand to advise on the BSc and MSc courses in Radiography [Leicester trained Student Radiographers will complete their academic learning at the University of Derby.]

Cathy continues: “There will also be an opportunity to learn about Apprenticeship training routes into Imaging. ‘

The department based at Leicester General Hospital, Gwendolen Road, Leicester, LE5 4PW will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 10 November 2017.
