Three events will take place between 10am and 2pm in the Education Centres at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital as well as at Glenfield Hospital in the Alfred Hill building. There will be an opportunity to speak to staff, tour the working areas and even undertake an interview. Full-time, part-time and flexible hours are all on offer.

John Protheroe, Charge Nurse at Leicester’s Hospitals, explains his role as a nurse at Leicester’s Hospitals: “My current role is really varied including managing a busy chemotherapy suite, looking after staff and their development needs, budgeting sensibly but mostly working with dedicated highly skilled staff in the clinical setting administering chemotherapy.”

“I enjoy the day to day challenges and being creative about how these are dealt with, most of all I enjoy looking after our patients and ensuring we give them the best experience we can.”

“In 1997 I developed cancer, while I was undergoing treatment I found the staff were truly inspiring and that life changing experience remained  with me until this day, in 2003 I finally decided it was my time to give something back. I qualified in 2005 and have progressed through training, support and opportunities into a band 7 role where I am now.”

“The reason I chose to work in oncology and more specifically the chemotherapy suite is simple, I want the best experience for people undergoing chemotherapy. A diagnosis of cancer can be terrifying and it’s important that we do our best in frequently difficult times to support our patients, it’s not always easy but is so rewarding to achieve this.”

John also described the best thing about working in Leicester:  “For me the best thing about Leicester is well Leicester City Football Club of course, what else could there be? No in all honesty it’s a great place to live loads to do and pretty much everywhere is easy to get to with the county being pretty central.”

There are a variety of opportunities available across our hospitals, including: Children’s Care, Emergency Department, Specialty Medicine, Renal, Respiratory, Cardiac and Vascular, Intensive Therapy Unit, Theatres, Musculoskeletal and Specialist Surgery, General Surgery, Haematology and Oncology.
