The observations have included a demonstration of the clinical skills simulator, insights into medical education and training, and an appreciation of the world-class clinical research happening in Leicester.

In addition, the delegates have spent time with clinical teams from haematology and renal (both including pathology), radiology, and vascular surgery.

The visit follows on from a Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the two organisations in November 2017. The agreement was intended to promote cooperation in medical research, training and education between the institutions.

Professor Nigel Brunskill, Director of Research and Innovation at Leicester’s Hospitals, said: “The last two weeks have strengthened the ties between Nantong and Leicester. From a research perspective, we have been able to share with our Chinese colleagues how research is funded, organised and delivered at Leicester’s Hospitals. It has opened up avenues for future collaboration. Indeed, we have just submitted our first joint grant application to the Ministry of Science and Technology in China.”

Professor Sue Carr, Director of Medical Education at Leicester’s Hospitals, said: “It was fantastic to welcome our visitors from Nantong. They attended several education events which we hope has given them an insight into undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in the UK. It was also fascinating to learn more about the medical education system in China. I hope there are opportunities for future collaboration, sharing of ideas and initiatives around education and training.”

Professor Jonathan Barratt, a consultant nephrologist at Leicester’s Hospitals, explained what the future holds for the partnership. He said: “We currently have Dr Xu Chen visiting for 12 months as an International Society of Nephrology Fellow from Nantong and will be supporting an application from another nephrologist from Nantong for the next application round.

"A delegation of nephrologists from Leicester’s Hospitals will visit Nantong later in the year for another round of clinical observations, medical demonstrations and meetings. I will also be supporting one of their junior faculty members apply to the Chinese National Natural Science Youth Fund.”

Jon Currington, Head of Partnerships and Business Development at Leicester's Hospitals, said: “I hope this visit will lead to new ways for our clinicians to come together for the benefit of patients in both China and England. I would like to recognise the work of the medical education, research and innovation, haematology, radiology, renal and vascular teams in making our guests welcome and making the visit a success.”
