Ten years ago, Bharat Patel had a kidney donated to him by his future wife Avril. They have dedicated their lives to supporting patients and families on the transplant list for kidneys at Leicester General Hospital and this is how they will be thanked.

Bharat and Avril met by chance at a shop in Scotland and became good friends over the years. When Bharat was placed on transplant list, Avril came forward to be a life donor and incredibly, she was a match. What makes this transplant even more unique and rare is the fact that Avril is white British and Bharat is Asian British.

When asked about receiving his transplant, Bharat said: “The transplant was a success and a life-changing experience. I felt like a little baby being born again with a brand new life ahead of me. Never could I even dream such a change in human lifestyle was possible.” “By donating her kidney to me in 2008, Avril participated in an act of sheer bravery, exhibiting extreme courage and unselfishness by giving me a brand new lease of life.”

They would later get married and support organ donation in Leicester where Bharat is a community ambassador for NHS Blood and Transplant, supporting Organ Donation by public engagement, encouraging conversation about donation.

Upon hearing about a wall mount going up in his honour, Bharat said: “I feel honoured and privileged that all the work I do, especially for the Leicester’s Hospital Renal Department, is being recognised by a wall mount going up in my honour on World Kidney Day 2019.”

“I hope this wall mount will provide “hope” for renal patients and inspire other volunteers to follow in my footsteps.”

The wall mount commemorates the anniversary of the transplant and pays tribute to the hard work they both do for organ donation. It has been funded by the NHS Blood and Transplant team.

The mount will be displayed in the main corridor at Leicester General Hospital so visitors can learn more about Bharat’s inspirational story.
