The trail, called ‘Images of Research’, comprises 18 pictures located at various points around the hospital. Visitors can collect a leaflet at the start of the trail near the hospital main entrance that shows where the different pictures can be found.

‘Images of Research’ is an annual photography competition for University of Leicester researchers at all stages in their careers. They are given the deceptively simple brief to submit an image that crystallises something about their research and conveys their passion for the subject. It helps researchers further develop their ability to communicate their research and findings with a range of audiences.

Alex Goddard, Head of Doctoral College at the University of Leicester, said: “The Images of Research is a fantastic celebration of the diverse and vibrant research found at the University, covering the full range of disciplines across the sciences and humanities. What is particularly special is that some of the images depict research that has taken place on hospital grounds and is directly contributing to improving the outcomes for patients, now and in the future.”

Karamjit Singh, Chairman of Leicester’s Hospitals, said: “This new arts trail has given us a fantastic opportunity to work with our colleagues at the University of Leicester on a project that will bring joy to our patients, visitors and staff. Not only does it brighten up the environment at Leicester General Hospital, by following the trail visitors will also be contributing positively to their physical activity levels - a key area of research for our biomedical research centre.”

Yogini Chudasama has recently completed her PhD with the University of Leicester and is now employed by the university as an epidemiologist in the Real World Evidence Unit based at Leicester General Hospital. Her work is featured in the arts trail. She said: ““It is exciting to be part of the art trail around the hospital, and this is wonderful way to share my PhD research with patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and multiple long term conditions.”

The ‘Images of Research’ trail is part of the hospital’s Arts and Heritage programme which launched in July 2018. The programme organises events and exhibitions in partnership with other local organisations to improve the work environment and the engagement, health and wellbeing of patients, visitors and staff.
