Leicester Tiger to unveil new Theatre Arrivals Area for orthopaedic surgical patients
Press release date15/04/2015
A new £350,000 Orthopaedic Theatres Arrival Area (TAA) at Leicester General Hospital will be officially unveiled later this week.

Press release

The project, which took just over six months to complete, has seen existing and unutilised space transformed into a dedicated arrivals area exclusively for Theatres 10 - 14 at Leicester General Hospital. The new space has created a more up to date, functional and welcoming space for orthopaedic patients and theatres staff.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Richard Power is Clinical Director for Musculoskeletal and Specialist Surgery at Leicester’s Hospitals. He explains: “The new Theatre Arrivals Area will greatly improve the pre-operative experience for patients due to have Orthopaedic Surgery, mainly hip and knee replacements.

“The new unit will eliminate the walk, which was a few hundred yards, from the admitting ward to theatre, improving dignity and comfort for our patients.  It will also allow patients to report straight to theatres 10 to 14 on arrival, where they will be seen by the surgeon and anaesthetist prior to surgery and prepared for theatre by the nursing team.”

Completed at the end of March, the TAA opened on Monday 13 April and is now used by 16 - 20 patients a day. Arrival times will be staggered to reduce waiting times for those patients listed for surgery in the afternoon.

A Theatre Arrivals Area provides a facility for patients to be admitted on the day of their surgery, to be processed by the nursing staff and to meet their anaesthetist and their surgeon, before they make their way into theatre for their operation. The concept of a TAA is well-received within the NHS and is designed to make the arrivals process for ambulatory surgical patients as smooth and efficient as possible.

The capital project cost £350,000, with equipment provided from the existing orthopaedic wards.

Sue Nattrass, general manager for Orthopaedics, added: “The team are really pleased with the facility and we look forward to seeing what our patients think. We are now working with the hospital’s Charitable Funds team to raise money to further enhance the environment for patients.”

It is hoped this new development will also allow for the reconfiguration of Wards 18 and 19 in order to create a similar facility for Theatres 8, 9A and 9B.

An opening ceremony will be held on Friday 17 April at Leicester General Hospital to showcase the new area. Leicester Tigers player, Gonzalo Camacho, is set to formally unveil the new facilities at 1.30pm.
