Medical Students

UHL 6th Form Schools Work Experience Programme for Aspiring Medical Students

Thank you for your interest in the UHL 6th form schools work experience programme for aspiring medical students. 

We regret that we are unable to provide the work experience programme this year. 

We are committed to supporting students in Leicestershire and Rutland and understand that this programme is valued by those wishing to pursue a future career in medicine.   Any planned future programmes will be re-advertised on our Hospitals Website.

Occupational Therapy

  • What do UHL offer? 
    Half a day shadowing opportunities to ask questions about occupational therapy as a course and career.
  • Who is it aimed at?
    People that are 17yrs and over, and who have an interest in embarking upon Occupational Therapy as a chosen career path or who have already applied for Occupational Therapy at degree level.
  • How do I apply?
    All queries are sent to Helen Sheard (Occupational Therapist), an application form is sent out to the applicant to complete and return.
  • What do I need?
    A-levels/ A/s Levels, previous degrees and other qualification related to Health and Social Care.

Radiology

  • What do UHL offer?
    2 days maximum observation of the different imaging modalities provided within UHL
  • Who is it aimed at?
    Students wanting to apply for radiography degree courses
  • How do I apply?
    Via direct contact to staff working within Imaging
  • What do I need?
    To be over 16 years of age.

Medical Physics

  • What do UHL offer? 
  • From 1st to 5th July, UHL will be hosting a limited number of healthcare science work experience placements.  This is an excellent opportunity for you to look around different departments within Medical Physics and talk to staff about careers and training.  Please refer to 'Option 1' for more information.
  • In exceptional cases, we may be able to offer work experience for a minimum of one month, where you will have the opportunity to observe staff and undertake project based assignments.
  • Who is it aimed at?
    Those over 16 years old with a long term interest in a career within Medical Physics, looking to gain experience to support an application to a relevant degree, training scheme or job.  Please note that these placements are not guaranteed and that you will need to be over 18 years to undertake work experience within Nuclear Medicine.

Embryology

  • Not currently available.  Dates for any future opportunities will be put on the website once they have been confirmed. 

Pharmacy

  • What do UHL Offer? Your chance to visit Leicester Royal  Infirmary, hear about the pre-registration training programme we offer and speak to our current pre-registration trainees.
  • Open afternoons:  these will be running on Wednesday 12th June and Tuesday 2nd July 2019.    Contact Rachel love in April for information.
  • Who do I contact? To book a place please email rachel.love@uhl-tr.nhs.uk stating your name, university and year of study (these days are open to 3rd years only), and which date you would like to attend.  Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.  We look forward to seeing you at one of these events.    

Physiotherapy

  • What do UHL offer? 
    We offer a physiotherapy work experience open day that will give you an insight into physiotherapy and the different areas, working in a hospital and outpatient setting, practical sessions in our physiotherapy gym and a representative from a physiotherapy university speaking about the application process.  The next physiotherapy work experience day will be Saturday 8th June 2019 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.   Please email to complete an application form. 
  • Who is it aimed at? Those who have a particular interest in pursuing a physiotherapy career.
  • What do I need?
    The assumption is that they would be studying the kind of subjects required for entry onto a physiotherapy degree course.

Cardiac Investigations

  • What do UHL offer? We offer a cardiac investigations work experience day for those over 16 years old who have an interest on embarking on Cardiac Physiology as a chosen career path or those who have already applied for Cardiac Physiology (BSc) at degree level. Students will gain insight into the department and have opportunity to question staff and placement students about the career and the degree.  We will further be offering a Saturday open day in March 2019 for students aged 14-16 years old, further information will be provided in the New Year.
  • Who is it aimed at? Those who have a particular interest in pursuing a Cardiac Physiology career.
  • What do I need? The assumption is that they would be studying the scientific subjects required for entry onto a Cardiac Physiology degree course.
  • Who do I contact? Students must apply via email themselves, detailing why they wish to attend a work experience day and a brief detail about themselves/ subject choices/career intentions to isobel.newman@uhl-tr.nhs.uk or charlotte.a.jeickles@uhl-tr.nhs.uk
