As a health employer, we understand the benefits of having apprentices within our workforce and they offer us a route to harness fresh new talent and develop our existing workforce. Apprenticeship Education Programmes are part of the Government’s commitment to build a better future for the Country. At Leicester Hospitals not only do we employ apprentices but we are also an apprenticeship training centre with a portfolio of programmes delivered to our people and a range of health and social care employers.

Apprenticeships at Leicester's Hospitals

What are Apprenticeships?

An Apprenticeship Education Programme is an integrated work based training and development programme designed around the needs of employers, reflecting required knowledge and competencies which lead to nationally accredited apprenticeship qualifications. Apprenticeships are seen by the Government as key in supporting future skills and economic recovery.

They are a way of:

  • Developing the skills of local people
  • Bringing young people into the workforce
  • Involving the local community in the delivery of local services
  • Training the organisation's current workforce and growing the workforce of the future
  • Increasing staff morale, productivity and retention
  • Succession planning

Apprenticeship Education Programmes come in a number of levels. They are often equivalent to qualifications we more commonly hear of e.g. Intermediate Level 2 is equivalent to 5 GCSE’s, Level 3 is equivalent to 2 A levels, Level 5 is equivalent to an Undergraduate Degree, Level 6 is equivalent to a Degree and Level 7 is equivalent to a Masters!

Staff new to the Trust will be employed on an Apprenticeship contract so that they have an opportunity to ‘earn while they learn’. Existing staff can develop their careers through these funded training programmes without changing their employment terms and conditions.

Secretary of State Return

Data Publication and Activity Return to the Department for Education

The Trust is required to complete an annual return to the Secretary of State on its Apprenticeship starts. The return includes several figures which will enable the Government, the public, and wider stakeholders to understand each body’s headcount and the number of apprentices they employ. The data collected will be published annually to support transparency and external accountability, and to help maintain the momentum public sector bodies have built up. At Leicester Hospitals in 2022/23 the following has been reported:

  • The number of new apprentices between 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023 (includes both new hires and existing employees who started an apprenticeship) at the Trust is 245.
  • The total Number of apprentices who were working at the Trust on 31 March 2023 was 448.
  • The reporting percentage of apprenticeship starts (both new hires and existing employees who started an apprenticeship) between 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023 as a proportion of total headcount on 31 March 2022 is 1.59%.
