Be a flu fighter this winter

We don’t want healthcare staff in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to wait until there is another flu scare to get their vaccine this coming winter, as it takes three weeks to provide maximum protection.

We started this year's flu vaccination campaign with drop-in sessions on Thursday 4 & 18 October in the main L'Eat restaurants across all three sites. It was a huge success with almost 2,200 staff receiving their flu vaccines on our launch days!

Over 170 of our staff became Flu Champions and have been trained as Peer Vaccinators to administer the vaccine directly on the ward or office! We also offer drop-in sessions at the Occupational Health departments at each hospital site throughout October, November and December.

The dedicated Occupational Health team, with support of our peer vaccinators, have now vaccinated 71% of our staff across Leicester's Hospitals!

Our very own UHL choir have recorded a special video to promote our Flu Champions and the Peer Vaccinator service at our Trust! A clever parody of the smash-hit by Queen, watch our own take on "We are the Champions" below.

Liz's story

One of our Peer Vaccinators this year is Liz Darlinson, our Nurse Consultant for Mesothelioma UK.

In this short video, Liz discusses her personal experience of flu and explains why she has become a Peer Vaccinator for UHL this winter.

Louise's Story

Louise is a nurse in medicines management at the University Hospital of Wales. In the winter of 2009, a fit and well mother to three girls, she was working full time and studying towards a degree. Louise didn’t have her flu jab, she was busy, she just “didn’t get around to it”. Find out what happened to Louise below...

Patients and members of the public can find further information about the flu jab by visiting 'The Flu Jab' on NHS Choices, or by booking an appointment with your GP to discuss your eligibility.
