Pathology Samples

Local GP Dr Leslie Borrill chats with Shaun Livsey, Biomedical Scientist who gives a practical demonstration of dealing with pathology samples and the correct container to use for the following samples - urine, stool, sputum, pertussis, fungal, gynaecological swabs and virology.

The key messages are:

  • Label all samples with a minimum of three patient reference points.

  • Electronic requesting is preferred along with printed labels for ease of reading. Please stick labels flat to sample containers.

  • Ensure tops are securely fitted to stop leakage.

Further guidance can be found in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory Services Handbook http://www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/aboutus/departments-services/pathology/clinical-microbiology/handbook/
